Navajo Fry Bread

Navajo Fry Bread Recipe. A light and fluffy bread.

Ingredients
all-purpose flour | 2 cups | |
baking powder | 1 Tbsp | |
salt | 1 tsp | |
corn oil | 1 Tbsp | |
water | 3/4 cup | |
For Frying | ||
corn oil | 2 cups | |
Topping | ||
honey | 1/2 cup | to taste |
powdered sugar | 1/4 cup | to taste |
Directions
- In a food processor or mixer combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Slowly add the corn oil and water and continue mixing until it forms a rough dough.
- Place the dough on a floured surface and gently knead until the dough is elastic and comes together. Do not overwork the dough.
- Shape the dough into a ball. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Flatten each piece and using a floured rolling pin roll into 7 inch thin discs. Using your finger poke a hole in the center of the dough. Repeat.
- In a large fry pan or deep fryer heat the corn oil to 360 degrees.
- One at a time carefully slip a piece of the flattened dough rounds into the hot oil and fry for 2 minutes. Turn the fry bread over once with a long handled spoon.
- Remove the fry bread from the oil and drain on paper towels. Repeat.
- Sprinkle the fry bread with powdered sugar and drizzle with honey as desired.
